Objective:

The client Magnet Systems Department/SCM Fabrication Group/Technical Support within the APS-Technical Division is seeking full time temporary mechanical technician staffing to fill an Engineering Technician III position for an estimated base period of one (1) year and up to four (4) 1-year renewal option periods at the end of each base period. The maximum duration of this position is 5 years. This position has a mandatory one (1) month probationary period. The classification is: Engineering Technician III. The SCA directory No. is: 30083.

General Technical Skill Requirements:

We are seeking a mechanical technician with at least 5 years’ experience in assembly/disassembly work including experience with hand tools. Grinding, cutting, and soldering are required. The technician will be working under the direction of engineers, scientists, and senior technicians doing work of varying degrees of precision (some high precision). The ability to read drawings, follow written assembly procedures (including data-entry of completed tasks of those procedures), and use a PC with MS Word & Excel. The ability to edit and update work planning documents (travelers).

Specific Technical Skill Requirements:

The technician shall have at least 3 years’ experience with winding and curing superconducting Rutherford type cable into coils using a variety of winding machines and curing presses is required. Similar experience in coil winding using non-superconducting cable is acceptable. Experience with cable fiberglass insulation repair is desirable. Experience with training technicians by demonstration and in written form (travelers).

Physical Activity and Work Conditions:

The technician must have the ability to lift 40 pounds, perform repetitive lifting of moderate weight, ability to climb stairs and ladders and stand for up to 4 hours per day and be able to work with epoxies, solvents, glues and other chemicals. The technician must have the ability and willingness to work occasional overtime on short notice in response to operation and emergency requirements.
