Tool Designer

MAJOR PURPOSE:

Plans, coordinates, develops and procures new concepts and designs for tooling to facilitate the implementation of new and revised products into the core manufacturing processes. Applies necessary Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing and uses technical judgment and past experience to evaluate various designs while maintaining and supporting current operations. The work typically involves less-complex fixtures, gauges, and tooling, including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic engineering. This role participates in design reviews and modifies design based on feedback, supports and coordinates with the craftsmen building the tools and gauges, and maintains the tooling database library. Receives input from senior designers or engineers.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Description of the major duties performed in this job.

Works with cross functional teams to design new tooling.
Participates in multifunctional design review to understand the product design intention and manufacturing processes.
Provides consultation and recommendations to less experienced designers and engineers.
Participates in tooling construction problem solving efforts.
Designs and creates 3 Dimensional (3D) models of tooling components and assemblies with the direction of the manufacturing engineer and tooling design supervisor.

Duties:

Execute the Tool Design process for assigned projects:
Review assigned work orders (WO)
Discuss WO with client stakeholders to clarify any ambiguous details and confirm project scope
Design concept up to 20% of project scope
Review concept w/ client stakeholders to verify direction/function until concept is approved
Complete design modeling o Review final design w/ client stakeholders until design is approved (prior to detailing)
Complete design detailed drawings (including CAD geometry needed for manufacturing)
Notify client Tool Design procurement when design is complete
Deliver build prints and review project with client Tool Makers
Attend fit/function test with Tool Maker and ME present
Provide troubleshooting input as required
Update design to “As Built” prints Ongoing Expectations:
WO priority and project due dates will be set by client and may change based on business needs
Client may request design changes at any time
All work will be performed on-site
Designs completed using Creo, Smart Assembly, PDM Link, UGS TeamCenter, AutoCAD, Ansys
Complete required safety and ergonomics training
Attend required client staff meetings
Update SAP with Electronic time entry, WO status updates
Use PDM Link for CAD file storage-retrieval
Use MS Outlook for email communication
Transfer data securely via client approved methods
The client will provide necessary software training

Additional Tool Design related skillsets that will set you apart:

Programming experience: C++, Python, SQL
Project Manager experience
Supply Management/Purchasing

Notes :

The client wants someone with working knowledge of Creo or other design tools who are willing to learn.
Highly prefers candidates with 5 or more years of Tool Design experience – Product design does not count.
Business casual dress code, will need metatarsals for first day.
This position will interview via MS Teams but work will be onsite on the first day.
Position will work roughly 45 hours a week so OT is likely.
This is a 1st shift position and will work onsite immediately.
May drive personal vehicle to other client locations for meetings.
