Position Overview



The Tool & Prototype Maker is responsible for preventive maintenance, repair of support equipment, training, and overseeing over all shop function. A toolmaker is responsible for making Engineered prototype parts, precision tools (such as jigs, molds and dies), special guides and holding devices, which are then used in the manufacturing process to make products. They will work with a variety of materials including metals, alloys, plastics and ceramics, A toolmaker’s job will also involve using computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines, so a solid background in a variety of technical and IT processes is important.

Responsibilities:

Proceed with all day-to-day Tool & Prototype Making operations; and adheres to internal working rules and guidelines.
Use sketches, blueprints, specifications, and models to plan operations for the fabrication of dies, tools, and assemblies, ensuring safety and maximum efficiency
Verify dimensions of finished parts to ensure they conform to specifications using dial indicators, gauge blocks, calipers, micrometers and or other measurement equipment.
Utilize hand and machine tools to assemble parts of tools and dies and to repair and modify gauges, jigs and dies
Design templates and jigs to be used as work aids for convenient fabrication of products and parts
Diagnose and troubleshoot problems and perform repairs on tools, manually operated dies and progressive dies
Interface with external and internal customers, handle supplier and customer concerns, and work with team members to solve problems during the production process
File and finish workpieces using the appropriate hand tools to ensure products are smooth and that they fit together properly
Select the appropriate metals and materials to be used based on properties, ensuring they meet project specifications

Required minimum Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience:
2-year vocational training desired + at least 5 years practical experience needed. Basic knowledge and experience of principles, procedures, work routines and skills in the related field of work, gained through structured and focused 2-year vocational training period.
Experience with Amada Coma Turret punch press, Amada break press, Hurco machine center, Mitsubishi wire EDM.
Minimum of 3 years programming 3 and 5 axis CNC machines using either CAM program or G Code. Hurco machine center, Mitsubishi wire EDM.
Experience with Tooling and adjusting Speeds and Feeds
Uses computer aided design software for creating complex models, patterns, templates, and component detailed drawings for new product concepts
Complete knowledge of equipment and practices associated with fixture, prototype, and mold building.
Full knowledge of precision inspection practices, hand tools and equipment.
In depth knowledge of materials used in the fabrication of tools, prototypes, and molds.
Ability to select correct materials based upon machining, heat treating, welding, wear and polishing.
Ability to read and comprehend blueprints and tool drawings.
Ability to program and operate CNC mills, CNC EDM's, CNC lathe and other standard tool room equipment.
CAD/CAM experience preferred (Solid works and Master cam).
Excellent PC skills, to include ability to learn new programs.
Analytical thinking combined with conceptual and organizational abilities.
Team oriented personality who can work well by themselves or on a team in an international environment.
Proactive at executing daily tasks and achieving long-term goals.
